Lighting

Natural Light - Shoot near a large window on a cloudy day.

Artificial Light - Two softbox lights are used at 45degree angles to avoid shadows.

Avoid - Bright sunlight, flash, or direct light behind the subject.

Camera Setup

Stability - Blurring is eliminated with the use of a tripod.

Distance - Stand 1.5–2 meters from the camera.

Framing - Your head should fill 70-80% of the frame.

Background

Material - A plain white wall or a wrinklefree sheet should be used.

Check for Shadows - Place the lights in a manner that there are no shadows on the backdrop.

Appearance

Clothing - The best to wear is a collared shirt, in a color that is not the background color (for instance, navy blue when submitting a white background).

Expression - Try to relax your face, look directly into the camera, and keep your mouth closed.

Accessories - Glasses, hats, or jewellery are not to be worn except for religious or medical reasons.

Editing Tools

Free Software - Basic cropping and resizing can be done using tools like GIMP or Canva.

Avoid Over-Editing - Do not apply filters, skin smoothing, or background replacement.

Common Mistakes & How to Avoid Them

Even slight mistakes can lead to the photo being rejected. Be careful with these tips -

Incorrect dimensions - Use a ruler or our online template to check if it is 35mm x 45mm.

Shadows on the background - Rearrange the lights or use a brighter background.

Blurry image - Clean the camera lens, make sure the device is steady, and ensure proper focus.

Wrong facial expression - Practice a neutral face in front of a mirror before taking the photo.

Overediting - Only tweak the size, brightness, and contrast of the photo.
